University of Maryland
Athletic Hall of Fame
1982-1998
The Athletic Hall of Fame was founded in 1982 by the M Club
Foundation as a join project with the Athletic Department.
The founders were then Athletic Director Dick Dull, Dr. Jack
Faber, Tom Fields, Al Heagy, Jim Kehoe, Art Kramer and Jack
Scarbath. They came up with a Hall of Fame selection criteria
and by-laws which were subsequently approved by an Election
Committee of former coaches and letterwinners appointed by
Dick Dull.
The Hall of Fame's objective is to extend recognition to
those exceptional Terp athletes who have contributed to the
honor and fame of the University in athletics and have continued
to demonstrate the positive values learned through participation
in intercollegiate sports. This is the highest honor the University
can bestow on former athletes.
Eligibility for election into the Hall of Fame is defined
by six criteria: (1) a letterwinner must be out of school
at least ten (10) years after graduation or completion of
eligibility; (2) a member of the Athletic Department must
earn a letter, or have served on the staff at least 15 years;
(3) you must achieve a record of superior athletic accomplishments;
(4) qualifications can include athletic accomplishments after
leaving school; (5) election shall be based on athletic merit
only; and (6) electee must be of good character and reputation.
Those superior athletes earning National Hall of Fame recognition
automatically qualify for induction, provided they meet the
other qualifications.
The Election Committee consists of the Athletic Director,
former coaches, athletes, alumni and Athletic Department staff
who have a strong identification and understanding of Terrapin
athletics. They embrace the full range of sports offered at
the University, both currently and in the past.
The Election Committee meets annually to elect inductees.
The induction ceremony takes place each year at the M Club's
Sports Awards Banquet in May. Anyone is permitted to propose
candidates for the Hall of Fame. Each nomination must have
a detailed biographical sketch on forms provided by the M
Club Foundation, Inc., PO Box 295, College Park, MD 20741.
Visitors to the main lobby of Cole Field
House can review plaques citing the accomplishments of the
University's greatest achievers in athletics. Inductees elected
