October 1940 - October 1942

  • James Stevens served as president for the two-year period.
  • A publication named the "Roll Call" was edited by President Stevens and by Ed Powell (the founder of lacrosse at Maryland). It contained a biographical sketch of over 200 letterwinners and was distributed to members for $1 each.

  • Football Coach Clark Shaughnessy was elected an Honorary Member.

October 1942 - November 1945

  • From '42 through '44, Homecoming dances were managed by the Student Government Association, as the University continued varsity football and basketball programs.
  • President Powell made all of the arrangements for the Homecoming program on November 10, 1945.

November 1945 - December 1947

  • The Permanent Endowment Fund increased to $2,842 with the annual scholarship grants rising to $292 for each athlete.
  • Historian Talbot T. Speer met with state representatives to discuss resuming competitive athletics in Maryland's high schools.
  • Football Coach Clark Shaughnessy gave birth to forming the Maryland Educational Foundation in 1946 as a football booster organization. He was ably assisted in the planning and organization by Al Heagy. Individual members of the M Club, including Bucky Clemson, James Swartz, Talbot Speer, A.V. Williams, Don Adams, Joe Deckman and Julie Radice, were instrumental in the formation of the MEF and provided the majority of the charter group. Later in the planning, the Terrapin Club was organized as the social segment of the organization.
  • County school superintendents were invited as guests at the N.C. State football game and a pre-game luncheon.
  • Engraved watches were awarded to selected athletes at the annual meeting held in the Washington Hotel after the UNC game.
  • The M Club received the entire profits from the Homecoming dances- $165 in '45, $899 in '46 and $565 in '47.

  • Profits from the Homecoming Dance were $708 in '48 and a record $1,100 in '49.
  • In 1948, Frank Cronin formed a spring sports program to stimulate interest among alumni and M Club members.
  • Sports Awards Banquets were held on April 24, 1948 and April 9, 1949. Both events were held in the Rotary Room on campus under Chairman Al Heagy. Coaches awards went to Jim Tatum and Burt Shipley in 1948 and Reggie Tuitt, Jack Faber, Geary Eppley and Les Bopst in 1949. Honorary memberships were also awarded.
