Chronological History of M Club Actions
Sep 1997 - Sep 1998

September 1997 - September 1998

  • John Lamon was elected president at our Annual Meeting on September 18, 1997. All attending were given a chance to win one of the M Club's new clothing items. Marshall Fesche was named treasurer, Phil Calder assistant treasurer and Steve Hayleck assistant secretary.
  • The M Club honored members of Maryland's first bowl team (the 1947 Tatum team that played to a 20-20 tie against Georgia in the Gator Bowl) at halftime of the Carolina game on September 20, 1997. The event celebrated the team's 50th anniversary.
  • On October 31, 1997, the Terrapin Football Practice Field Complex was named after Col. J. Logan and Louise Schutz.
  • The University announced a Capital Campaign to raise $350 million in private funds to build new facilities and renovate current facilities. An Athletic Campaign to raise $57.8 million by the end of 2002 is an integral component of this University initiative. Jack Heise is the chairman of the Athletic Campaign. Priorities for the Campaign include: $3 million for scholarship endowments; $20.4 million for annual scholarships; and $34.4 million for facility projects, such as a new basketball arena or renovation of Cole Field House, a new softball field, a press box for Ludwig Field/Kehoe Track, golf course locker rooms, and an addition to the Gossett Football Team House.
  • Since 1989, 14 former athletes have returned to earn their degrees with help from the Academic Support for Returning Athletes Program (ASRAP). The graduates are: Rick Badanjek, Jeff Baxter, Rodney Caldwell, Chris Kerwin, Chris Kolodzicy, Cedric Lewis, Derrick Lewis, Marc Manges, Andre Vaughn, Warren Powers, Vernon Joines, Kevin McLinton and Larry Gibson.
  • Our Career Development program is growing. The M Club is playing a significant role in the development and sponsorship of a "Corporate Playbook." It will provide biographical information and other facts for each of the graduating athletes and made available to companies for potential job placements.
  • Jack Flynn is coordinating a program that will "grandmother" varsity letters to those women athletes who competed against other university teams prior to their sport awarding letters.
  • We mailed a dues letter to all former letter winners from their sports representative, together with a copy of our new brochure and an M Club clothing order form (see Appendix M for an order form).
  • Among the projects the M Club is sponsoring is the new Maryland Athletes Placement Source (MAPS) directory to assist graduating athletes in the job market; the awards for academic achievement and community service to be presented at the President's Cup luncheon; and the computers for the lab in Academic Support.
  • The Hall of Fame Election Committee is working with Curt Callahan (assistant athletic director for facilities) to arrange for special recognition in Cole Field House for Maryland's greatest individual athletic achievers; namely those superior athletes who have either (1) won individual national championships; (2) been members of US Olympic teams; or (3) been named National Players of the Year in their sport. A tentative list of 36 athletes have been identified.
  • Two committees were also formed to update the Hall of Fame's women's and men's nomination lists and to assign a priority criteria. The committees are chaired by Ellie Fields and Jack Zane, and assisted by Laura LeMire, Tom Fields, and Dave Diehl.
  • A special Hall of Fame By-Laws Review Committee was formed to complete a review by September 4, 1998. It is chaired by Jack Scarbath with John Gilmore and Jim Kehoe assisting.
  • At our Annual Banquet on May 1, 1998, the M Club celebrated its 75th Aniversary. We are one of the nation's first letter winner organizations. Steve Hayleck chaired our 47th Annual Banquet and 16th Annual Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. Outgoing University President, Dr. William E. Kirwan, accepted the Distinguished Citizen Award.
  • M Clubber Sue Tyler, currently Maine's Athletic Director, presented the inaugural "Suzanne Tyler Award" to Maryland's best female athlete of the year.
  • A women's M Club reception was held on January 24 following the Maryland vs. Clemson men's game.
  • A reception for all wrestling alumni was held on February 14 in Tyser Tower. It followed the match with Duke held in the renovated Ritchie Coliseum.
  • Thanks to the M Club contribution to the Athletic Department, 14 new computers are now available for athletes' use in the Academic Support and Career Development computer lab. This is another effort by the M Club to provide assistance for current athletes in ways other than direct scholarship aid. That is why our motto is "The M Club - Athletes Helping Athletes."
  • After five consecutive years in Byrd Stadium, the men's final four in lacrosse was held at Rutgers from May 23 - 25. Maryland's 1973 National Champions were honored for their championship win in double overtime over Hopkins.
  • The following special events were held by the M Club: the Annual M Club/Cronin Golf Tournament on June 3; the 3rd Annual Letterwinner's Day and Tent Party on September 5; the Annual Rodman Celebrity Golf Tournament on September 8; and our 75th Annual Meeting on September 17.
  • Our assets for fiscal '98 exceeded $1.4 million.
